Adopt a Student from the Donor's Viewpoint
Comments from members of the Board who met with their students during the meetings in May.
"At the last meeting of the Board of Governors at Shenkar I had the pleasure to sit in for two sponsors of three Adopt-a-Students. The meeting only lasted one hour but, honestly, it was one of the most refreshing hours of my three days at Shenkar. The students were two young women and one young man. The young women were from fashion design and the young man was from industrial design. Each showed me their recent work, much of which was quite spectacular, and each was extremely grateful for the financial support of the Adopt-a-Student programme. Several times I heard "if it wasn't for this support I would never have been able to continue with my education." That's quite something to hear from a young person and this is a programme which I intend to recommend to all international Friends of Shenkar".
Richard Schiffer, Chairman of the British Friends of Shenkar
"I have been most fortunate in my life to be able to be on the giving side of things and in many cases write checks to worthwhile organizations that I sometimes wonder how the money I give gets distributed. The Adopt a Student program is truly unique when you hear the student discuss their challenges of student life as well as being able to provide themselves with the necessary essentials and how significant the funds that they receive from the program are to make life easier for them. It is heartwarming to see their true appreciation and it has been a true reward for me to know that through my contributions, I have made a difference in someone’s life".
David Blumenthal, President/CEO Lion Brand Yarn Company, U.S.
"The students are truly the heart of Shenkar. As such, nothing inspires us more than seeing the student's incredible work and getting to know them. Shenkar students possess a passion for their studies that motivates Shenkar's friends to be their voice around the world. Many of us friends of Shenkar give to the college in numerous ways. However, few can be as personally rewarding as adopting a student.
Over the past three years, my husband, Robert Kinberg and I have participated in the Adopt a Student program by helping our student, Gregory fulfill his dreams. Gregory, who is an extraordinarily gifted jewelry designer has grown and developed before our eyes. The experience been very special for us knowing we had a small part in his achieving his goals. Through the years we have developed a mentoring friendship filled with warmth and appreciation from Gregory. On our recent visit, Gregory gave me a beautiful ring he created to thank me for our help. I was very touched by this special gesture. We are extremely proud to know he will be graduating shortly and has a brilliant future ahead of him. Gregory has now become our friend. Robert and I, not only Gregory, have gained much from involvement with his education at Shenkar".
